Hallside Village lies south of Newton Station in the district of Cambuslang, Scotland. It was originally built to serve the nearby Hallside Colliery, but in the early 1870s it was expanded with the addition of the "English Houses" being built to the east of the original "Tarry Rows" to serve the Hallside Steelworks. The steelworks were opened in 1873 by the Steel Company of Scotland, later becoming part of the Colville Steel Company and under nationalisation becoming part of British Steel, finally closing around 1980. The "Tarry Rows" have been long since demolished and replaced by newbuild houses in the Drumsargar estate, however, the "English Houses" are still standing following renovation works.
Drumsargar is Gaelic for "Hill of the Priest" and the site is believed to have had a church on it around 1100. The ruins of Drumsargar Castle were believed to have been used to build parts of Hallside House & Home Farm, owned by the Jardine family (refer file below for George Charles Jardine) since 1790 until about 1910. Professor George Jardine, the original owner in 1790, was Professor of Medicine at Glasgow University and was a founder member of the Glasgow Royal Infirmary. In 1910 Hallside House was bought by a Mr. John Jackson Esq. (refer file below) who was the Chief Metallurgist at Hallside Steelworks and he resided in the "English Houses" in 1901.
My interest in the Hallside Census of 1901 was in respect of a search for Thomas Pallett, his wife Jane and their daughters (particularly Margaret Pallet, my wife's greatgrandmother). Thomas was a steelworker, born in Ireland, who worked at Hallside in the 1870s and 80s. Thomas and Jane were not recorded on the 1901 Census and I subsequently discovered that they had both died in 1900 within 3 months of each other! I eventually found them on the 1891 Census residing at 144 Hallside Village, part of the "Tarry Rows".
